Route Setter Job Description
General Description:
The Route Setter plays a key role in shaping the climbing experience at The Boulder Garden. This role involves the creative design and setting of boulder problems ranging from V0 to V8, ensuring a diverse and engaging environment for climbers of all abilities. The Route Setter works closely with the Head Route Setter and other setters to maintain fresh, balanced, and safe routes on a weekly basis. In addition to route setting, the Route Setter helps with wall maintenance and gym cleanliness, contributing to the overall safety and enjoyment of the space.
Qualifications:
Reliable transportation to and from 328 Roney St.
Must be at least 18 years old
CPR/First Aid certified (can be obtained during training)
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs above your head
Experience in climbing and route setting preferred (1+ years recommended)
Knowledge of climbing techniques and an ability to set varied styles (e.g., dynamic, static, power, technical)
Strong communication skills and a collaborative spirit to work with the setting team and interact with gym members
Primary Responsibilities:
1. Route Planning & Setting:
Set and design boulder problems ranging from V0 to V8, ensuring a wide range of challenges for climbers.
Collaborate with the Head Route Setter and other team members to plan, install, and update routes on a month rotation schedule.
Ensure routes are safe and appropriate for climbers of varying abilities and body types.
Set top-out features where applicable, ensuring clear communication regarding designated top-out sections.
Forerun anywhere from 6-10 boulders a night and collaborate with the team to determine necessary tweaks.
2. Wall Maintenance:
Regularly clean holds, remove outdated routes, and store equipment properly.
Assist in maintaining setting tools and inventory, ensuring everything is in proper working condition.
Report any wall damage or maintenance needs to management for prompt resolution.
Safety & Member Engagement:
Monitor the climbing floor to ensure safety practices are being followed by all climbers, especially in top-out areas.
Engage with climbers to gather feedback on routes and make necessary adjustments based on their input.
Provide route demonstrations and offer advice to climbers looking to improve their skills.
Secondary Responsibilities:
Assist with gym cleanliness, including occasional checks of climbing mats and holds.
Support special events by setting or modifying routes for competitions, clinics, or community events.
Participate in youth and member route setting clinics, helping others develop their route-setting skills.
Assist with youth programs including: holiday camps, birthday parties, intro/rec. team.
Schedule:
Every Saturday from 6-11pm.
Each setter will get 1-2 weeks off each month.
Additional shifts as needed for events or route changes.
Options for more weekly shifts including Youth Coach and Host at the same pay rate.
