Position Title: Youth Coach

Location: The Boulder Garden

Reports to: Youth Director

Employment Type: Part-Time or Full-Time (10–40 hours/week)

Position Summary

The Youth Coach plays a central role in shaping the next generation of climbers at The Boulder Garden. This multifaceted position supports our Intro and Recreation Youth Teams, afterschool programs, birthday parties, and holiday/summer camps. Youth Coaches are responsible for supervising young climbers, teaching age-appropriate bouldering techniques, promoting safety, and creating a positive, inclusive, and growth-oriented environment. This role requires energy, patience, and a passion for working with youth in both structured team environments and casual recreational settings.

Key Responsibilities

Instruction & Mentorship

  • Lead and assist youth in learning fundamental bouldering skills and gym etiquette.

  • Provide clear, engaging instruction adapted to various skill levels and age groups.

  • Encourage personal growth by setting individual goals and supporting progress.

  • Support social-emotional learning and foster a positive team environment.

Program & Activity Leadership

  • Coach youth in scheduled team practices, afterschool climbing, and introductory classes.

  • Lead or support activities during camps, including both climbing and non-climbing games.

  • Facilitate climbing-related games and challenges during birthday parties and events.

  • Help maintain a smooth flow throughout daily programming, transitions, and group activities.

Safety & Supervision

  • Actively monitor climbing areas, ensuring proper technique and spotting.

  • Uphold all safety guidelines and reinforce falling and climbing best practices.

  • Conduct visual safety checks of gear, space, and participant behavior.

  • Address incidents, injuries, or conflicts promptly and in line with protocol.

Parent & Team Communication

  • Maintain clear and friendly communication with families and caregivers.

  • Share progress updates and behavioral notes as needed in collaboration with the Youth Director.

  • Represent The Boulder Garden’s values of inclusion, respect, and environmental responsibility in all parent and community interactions.

General Operations

  • Assist in setting up and breaking down climbing stations and camp zones.

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in climbing and shared activity spaces.

  • Participate in training and team meetings to stay aligned with youth programming goals.

Qualifications

Required

  • Must be at least 18 years old.

  • Experience working with children in a recreational, coaching, or camp environment.

  • CPR/First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain prior to employment; offered by The Boulder Garden).

  • Ability to climb and spot safely.

Preferred

  • Previous experience as a youth climbing coach or camp counselor.

  • Familiarity with bouldering safety and instruction (we will train the right candidate).

  • Background in leadership, education, or youth development.

  • Previous experience or current interest in route setting.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to climb and move around climbing walls and padded flooring.

  • Capable of standing, walking, lifting up to 40 lbs, and assisting children during activities.

  • Comfortable in both indoor and outdoor environments.

Schedule & Compensation

  • Weekday and weekend availability required; specific schedule depends on programming needs.

  • Shifts typically range from 3 to 8 hours.
